I just came back from my weekly foray into the Huong Vuong supermarket
in the Wing Phat shopping center (11th & Washington Ave). I notice that
there are several restaurants facing the parkng area and I wonder whether
anyong in the NG has experience and/or opinion about them. One is named
Nam Phuong, another is Pho Ban and a couple just have Asian characters.
Thanks for any info.

Nam Phuong has been around for years--it used to be at 8th & Christian,
but moved to 11th & Washington a couple years ago. It's always been a
reliably good Vietnamese restaurant.

Had lunch at Nam Phuong a couple of Saturdays ago. Good meal and good
lesson watching my neighbors prepare their Pho: basically, dumping
everything on the side platter plus hot sauce into the bowl.

We had the specials that I had gleaned from some review:
Summer roll - very delicate with nice filling, but the soft thin
wrapper wasn't right for a frigid day. Try this in the summer.
Duck & bamboo soup - very good - like Pho but with duck
Grape leaves with beef - like the Greek dish, but more beef, less rice.
Tough, too cold for a cold day.

Also green papaya salad. Not as good as in Malaysia, but I love it.

We'll go back!
(And we stopped at the supermarket for a few semi-exotic things.)

Ah that's where I've seen the name "Nam Phuong" from.
I haven't been to 8th street in a while. Is there something occupying
that corner now?

No, it's vacant at the moment. There was a vegetarian place in there for
a while, but it closed in a few months.

We've been to Pho Ban. All they serve is pho, and while it's very good
there, if you want something more substantial then this isn't for you. Nam
Phuong got a good review in my BIL's local paper. I'm always looking for a
new Vietnamese restaurant and intend to try it when the weather warms up a
little.

I've tried both, and they have their own positive and negatives, but you
need to decide what you are in the mood for. Pho Ban mainly serves Pho
and various broken rice platters. If I want to get something fast and
cheap, I always go for Pho. Another Pho place on 6th & Washington is
good. Don't go there on the weekends. Sometimes you have to stand
there and wait.

Nam Phuong ... I think is an old restaurant. I've seen that name
somewhere else, too.

They have good food there, too, but I have had bad service there.
We had to wait for our food as long as 30 minutes the past 2 times that
I went there. And it wasn't as if the order was complicated. One of
the orders was "Shrimp Fried Rice". The rest required a little more
prepping. Maybe you will have better luck with the service. I did go
during dinner time (7 - 8 p.m.).

That's Pho Ha, which I love. You rarely if ever have to wait more than
five minutes or so, even at its busiest.

Well, when I go with 2 or 3 other people, the wait isn't that bad when
they are busy. But the time I do have to wait are when I am with 6-8
people and they won't seat us apart in different tables.

The place on the west side of square [near street] has a lot of smokers.
