Does anyone know of any Brazilian or Portuguese restaurant around
the Philly area? And is the restaurant good?

I am not saying that Portuguese and Brazilian are the same, but
I'd like to compare the two and since I never had either one...

Thanks.

there's a BRazilian place on about the 200 block of Chesnut; i think
it's just called 'Brasil".
There's some pretty good Portuguese in the Adams-Tabor shopping center
in the Northeast.
also, I think Mallorca on South St. has Portuguese as well as Spanish
dishes.

You could check out Cafe Portugalia or Taste of Portugal, both in the same
strip of shops at Adams Ave. & Tabor Rd in the northeast. We've been to
Taste of Portugal several times and their seafood is wonderful. I
particularly like the paella, $18 for two...it's humongous, loaded with
shellfish, chicken, and Portuguese sausage

You're right in that they're definitely not the same. The Brazilians are
big meat eaters, and a traditional Brazilian restaurant will usually feature
beef on the spit which is often carved for you at tableside. When it comes
to meat, the Portuguese prefer pork, often in combination with clams.

There's Samba at 7th and Girard which features charrscaria rodizio (all you can
eat Brazilian buffet where waiters come to your table and shave meat off of a
spit). Also, there's Brasil's on the 200 block of Chestnut but last time I was
through there it looked like it had closed. Does anyone know if there are any
Brazilian restaurants in the vicinity of the intersection of Cottman and Castor
Aves? That's the heart of the Brazilian immigrant community in Philadelphia
(such as it is).

Wow, thanks for posting about Samba! When I was in Rio last November,
my daughter and I (and a bunch of her fellow triathletes) ate at the
buffets each night. However, down there they charge by the kilo, and
you can get an amazing amount of wonderful food for under $10 per
person! As a meat lover, I really got my money's worth every evening.

I am not sure if its still in business, but there used to
be a Brazilian restaurant on the 7000 block of Castor
Avenue in the Northeast. I have never eaten there, but its
right around the corner from my parents' house and I have
walked by there many times. I am fairly sure that restaurant
is still in business, but its been a while since I walked
by there. Sorry, I do not remember the restaurant's name.

Actually, it turns out the Brazilian restaurant I had in
mind is no longer in business. I visited my parents today
and I passed by Castor and the restaurant is now something
else, not food related.

You might want to try Sabor Latino in Upper Darby. I believe the address
is 33 Garrett Ave. I've been there once and liked it. Craig Laban
reviewed it in the Inky back in the fall. Too bad that review isn't on
the web anymore, but I seem to remember that he liked it.

Two Portuguese restaurants I've tried here in Phila:

Berlengas Islands Restaurante
(Closed Weds.)
4926 North 5th St, Philadelphia, PA
(corner 5th & w rockland, just n. of roosevelt), park on street
Tel: (215) 324 3240
have had a seafood paella there which was very good. Our group liked
the sangria, and you can order a vinho verte IIRC.

Now...there was another one, near Elkins Park PA, in a shopping center
i think. Don't remember the name, it was a couple years ago. They had
a great grilled sausage served on a tiny grill at your table. It could
be one of the ones at Adams & Tabor at the shopping center, but i;m
really not certain, sorry.

Elkins Park is about a 20 minute drive from Adams & Tabor so I doubt it was
there. I like the idea of the grill on the table though.

I have a vague memory of a restuarant that had both Portuguese and, I
think, Italian food (including brick oven pizza, maybe) on Huntingdon
Pike, near Elkins Park. Ricardo's sounds like the right name?

Oh, yes, I know that place. It's on Huntingdon Pike in the Lower
Moreland Township part of Huntingdon Valley, close to Red Lion Road. I
remember being referred there for some excellent lemonade by the
employees of the First Union (now Wachovia) branch a block away. When
First Union took over the bank from CoreStates, they took out the water
fountain, so everyone had to find other ways to quench their thirst. I
tried the lemonade at Ricardo's, and it was every bit as good as I had
been led to believe it would be.

Thanks to all who posted their suggestions for the restaurant.

So for the next month or so, I will try to make it to all or some
of them depending the neighborhood I am driving through :)

I often wondered the same. Are there any Portuguese or Brazilian
restaurants in Philly? Some of the establishments mentioned here I have
already heard of. But Samba I haven't. I think it's worth checking out
according to the posts in this thread. My brother-in-law is Portuguese
and lived in Philly for a short time before marrying my sister. Now
they live just outside Newark, NJ. Portuguese capital of America (from
what I understand anyway?) If you ever get the chance to visit the
Ironbound section of Newark check out Ferry Street (Little Portugal).
Tons of places to eat there. Also a visit to A & J Seabra's supermarket
on Lafayette St. is also a pretty cool experience for someone who has
never shopped at a Portuguese/Brazilian supermarket before!
